Fostering Equity during WIN using MyFlexLearning
Newton North High School is at the forefront of personalizing education through the use of time. Newton North is a high school in the Boston metro area with over 2,000 students and about 450 staff members. They grounded their WIN Block in their goals of diversity, equity, academics and SEL.
Newton North intentionally scheduled WIN to be in the middle of the school day so all students could attend. Their offerings align with these goals, as well. Newton North High School students use WIN Block to meet with their teachers, complete assignments and assessments, develop their social and emotional learning skills or participate in enrichment activities.
Newton North brought in MyFlexLearning to manage their WIN Block when they redesigned their master schedule and changed the way they used their flexible time.
“The flexible block became a place where we could get kids support, we could talk about the hot topics when they came up, we could slow down our day and get kids some enrichment as well. So that became one of the drivers for our overall schedule,” said Dr. Henry J. Turner, Principal of Newton North High School.
Newton North has a five day cycle with a rotation. Within that, Newton created three coordinating times in their schedule: Advisory, WIN and Tiger Time.
- WIN Block meets 3 times a cycle for 50 minutes
- Advisory meets Monday mornings for 20 minutes
- Tiger Time meets once a week for 50 minutes
Each flexible time serves a specific need for their students and staff.
