Schools across the US and Canada are using MyFlexLearning to take their flex time to the next level. These schools are using every minute of the school day to maximize student achievement and well being.
Newton North High School, with over 2,000 students and about 450 staff members, grounded their WIN program in their goals of diversity, equity, academics and SEL. They intentionally scheduled it in the middle of the school day so all students could attend. Their offerings align with these goals, as well.
Newton North has a five day cycle with a rotation. Within that, Newton created three coordinating times in their schedule: Advisory, WIN and Tiger Time.
Each flexible time serves a specific need for their students and staff.
“The flexible block became a place where we thought we could get kids support, we could talk about the hot topics when they came up, we could slow down our day and get kids some enrichment as well. So that became one of the drivers for our overall schedule.”
- Dr. Henry J. Turner, Principal of Newton North High School
Nashua School District has two high schools: Nashua North and Nashua South, with a combined 300 teachers and 4,000 students. Nashua implemented an E-Block after noticing low student participation in clubs and sports, low student involvement and dropping grades. Many students weren’t able to attend class makeup sessions, which were offered after school.
Nashua's E-Block is offered during the school day, so students can use the time for academics, enrichment, club, and their personal well-being. Students from Nashua's two high schools attend classes at either school, so MyFlexLearning ensured teachers and students could schedule cross-campus.
Nashua has a two day cycle with a rotation. E-block meets every day, M-F for 35 minutes, and Monday is a "Stay Day," where students meet with their Advisor and plan out their week using MyFlexLearning.
“MyFlexLearning was exactly the fit we needed. It was super easy, calendar-based and it saved administration a ton of time. It also saved us many, many thousands of dollars by buying the MyFlexLearning program and having it work seamlessly with [Nashua’s SIS,] Aspen,” said Donna Latina.
North Middlesex Regional High School, a rural school that spans over 80 square miles,
has 750 students and 135 staff. They have a 7 day, 6 period rotated schedule. WIN is offered daily M-F for 35 minutes.
Launched in 2019 to give students who couldn’t attend extra help after school an opportunity to get time with their teachers. It has grown into an opportunity for SEL and enrichment. AP and Science teachers also use flex time for labs and extra learning opportunities.
North Middlesex has students meet with their Advisors each Friday during WIN to schedule the following week, which allows students and teachers to prepare for the week before it begins. That time is also used for assemblies and administrative time, which reduces interruptions to academic learning time.
